CHEM 120 Dr. Dunn Name: Date: Chapter 1 Worksheet The steps of the Scientific Method: ● Step 1- Observation/Question. The “thing” that you want to know. The question you want to answer. ● Step 2-Research. Conduct research. Information about the problem. ● Step 3-Hypothesis. ● Step 4-Experiment. Test the hypothesis. ● Step 5-Analysis of Data ● Step 6-Results/Conclusion ● Step 7- Communicate. Present/share your results. Replicate. For each of the following situations, list, and describe each aspect of the scientific method that is being used and list any aspects that are not used: 1. Louis Pasteur noticed that soup broth had not been boiled and was placed in an open container would eventually grow bacteria, but when broth was placed in a container with a downward facing opening, no bacteria would grow. 2. Some of the people that attended a party the previous night became very ill. A doctor thought it may have been caused by spoiled potato salad. She tested the potato salad for bacteria. 3. You try to start up your computer, but when you turn on the power, it beeps three times and the screen stays black. You think the monitor may have gone bad. 4. A college student notices that the grocery store sells a much cheaper ‘generic’ detergent and wonders if it will clean his clothes as well as the more expensive ‘name brand’ detergent he uses. He purchases the generic detergent and washes some of his clothes with it and some of his clothes with his original name brand detergent only to find that there is no noticeable difference between how clean they are. He figures if it works just as well, he might as well buy the less expensive generic detergent. For each of the following observations, develop a hypothesis and describe a possible experiment that could be performed to support or disprove your hypothesis: (The answers below will vary, as many answers may apply here. if your answers don’t match mine you can email me for verification. Just make sure your hypothesis is testable.) 5. When you leave school to go home in the afternoon, you notice that there is a dent in your car that wasn’t there before. There are some streaks of red paint inside the dent. 6. You find that you tend to get sick when you forget to take your daily vitamins. 7. You notice that some people are regularly late to Chemistry class while others are always on time. 8. You notice that a loaf of bread stored in the refrigerator takes longer to develop mold than a loaf of bread stored in the pantry. 9. Grass growing in your front yard, which has no trees, begins to grow sooner in the spring and turns yellow sooner in the fall. Grass growing in your backyard, which has several trees, takes longer to grow and stays green all year round. Louis Pasteur noticed that soup broth had not been boiled and was placed in an open container would eventually grow bacteria, but when broth was placed in a container with a downward facing opening, no bacteria would grow. Step 1- Observes broth behavior in two conditions. Steps 2-7 Does not apply 2. Some of the people that attended a party the previous night became very ill. A doctor thought it may have been caused by spoiled potato salad. She tested the potato salad for bacteria. Step 3 – The doctor makes a hypothesis about what caused the students to get sick. Step 4- The doctor tested her hypothesis by testing . Steps 1, 2, 5-7 Does not apply 3. You try to start up your computer, but when you turn on the power, it beeps three times and the screen stays black. You think the monitor may have gone bad. Step 1- Observes computer behavior. Step 3 -You guess why the computer isn’t working. Steps 2, 4-7 Does not apply 4. Step 1- Observes cost of items. Step 3 – The college student thinks the generic laundry detergent will work the same as the brand name Step 4 – The college student conducts an experiment by washing some clothes in the generic detergent and others in the brand name detergent. Steps 2, 5-7 Does not apply For each of the following observations, develop a hypothesis and describe a possible experiment that could be performed to support or disprove your hypothesis: (The answers below will vary, as many answers may apply here. if your answers don’t match mine you can email me for verification. Just make sure your hypothesis is testable.) 5. When you leave school to go home in the afternoon, you notice that there is a dent in your car that wasn’t there before. There are some streaks of red paint inside the dent. Hypothesis: A red car hit my car, causing it to leave a dent. Experiment: Obtain a sample of the red paint and test it for car paint colors. 6. You find that you tend to get sick when you forget to take your daily vitamins. Hypothesis: Vitamins cause an increase in my immune system, which makes me not get sick. Experiment: Take vitamins for several weeks and see if I get sick. 7. You notice that some people are regularly late to Chemistry class while others are always on time. Hypothesis: There are not spots close to the chemistry building 15 minutes before class, so students have to park far away and takes longer to walk to class. Experiment: 15 minutes before class, take an assessment of free spots in parking lot 3. 8. You notice that a loaf of bread stored in the refrigerator takes longer to develop mold than a loaf of bread stored in the pantry. Hypothesis: Mold grows slower in colder temperatures, which is why mold grows sooner on room temperature bread. Experiment: Take different types of bread and leave them at room temperature and the fridge and track the mold growth 9. Grass growing in your front yard, which has no trees, begins to grow sooner in the spring and turns yellow sooner in the fall. Grass growing in your backyard, which has several trees, takes longer to grow and stays green all year round. Hypothesis: Trees impose shade on the growing grass which causes the grass to grow later in the spring. Experiment: Grow grass with a shaded area without a tree (i.e. a patio covering), and see if it grows later.
