Particular instructions for this lab:
Be sure to begin with locating and labeling all the cities on the world map as instructed. (Note that the world map is a Robinson map projection so the lines of longitude are curved to help preserve the sense of area of the globe. You can not just project down from the longitude lables on the top and bottom.)
You are given climate data for twelve cities, and will use the data to construct climographs from four of those cities. Climographs from the other eight locations have been made for you already. You will need to study all twelve climographs in order to answer the questions at the end of the exercise, so don’t ignore the ones you did not need to create. Use the existing climographs as models to help you stay on track with the climographs you make, and the data below each climograph to help you accurately determine the temperature range, precipitation, etc. for each of the four locations that you graphed.
You will use the graph paper provided to plot the temperature ranges of each of the twelve stations in #13.
To determine the Koppen climate types for the four locations you graphed, follow the “Procedure for Classifying Climate” on page 152. Be sure to follow the steps in order, and use the additional tables and charts as needed. Also – ask for help if you need it! Your professor is happy to assist you but is stymied if you don’t let him or her know that you have questions.
After completing the Climate Classification lab, go on to the Climate of Your Hometown sheet. It’s important to understand the climate of the place where you live, and this is your chance. Find climate data for your hometown. The Western Regional Climate Center is a good place to start; try searching for your city name, state and “wrcc” and see what you can find. Remember that you only want one temperature figure for each month, so if you find a monthly high and a monthly low, you will need to average them together. Also, be sure to include the range of years that comprise the data you are using. Only one year does not represent climate data – that’s merely weather. It must be based on at least twenty years of data to be considered climate.
