Which rehabilitative approach could be more promising in changing chronic hard core criminals and which rehabilitative approaches may be more suitable for occasional offenders? And why?
The odds against a hard core criminal reforming are pretty wrong. A hard core criminal is a criminal who has committed many offenses intentionally and is proud of them. A career felon (a person who has committed felony and misdemeanor criminal acts for the majority of their life) will likely never change. There is often little incentive for them to do so (this includes their family) and most are anti-social people who never receive counseling to curb their anti-social impulses. Most hardcore criminals undergo a series of drug problems and many of their charges are related to their desire to use drugs. The most effective rehabilitation for hardcore criminals will be the good life model.
The good life model is a type of rehabilitation that gives the offender the holistic nature and addresses issues that are not tackled by the traditional risk management approach (Ward, Gobbles, & Willis, 2014). The GLM focuses on the individual development. This method does not adopt the commonly one size fits all philosophy. It is tailored to meet each person’s needs since a thorough research is done. The primary and secondary goals are considered and a comprehensive plan is drawn out of it. Hardcore criminals draw their motivation from many activities which lead them to participating in criminal activities. The good life model takes into account their motivation factors and they are discussed with the criminal this can help them give up on the criminal activities. There is a positive and respectful approach to the offenders. The techniques include moving toward the guilty parties with most extreme regard and humankind. It is an open discussion and they are permitted to easily air their perspectives which are then thought about. This reestablishes their confidence and they can adjust regularly to the life after jail.
The good life method receive the quality based approach and the guilty parties’ advancement abilities. The advisors are required to center on the essential objectives and qualities of the person. This could be by enabling them to partake in various exercises which they believe they can improve the situation in. aptitudes are produced by dealing with the deficiencies to a great extent and concentrating on the qualities. The exhaustive arrangement that is drawn at last tends to the diverse challenges the wrongdoer is probably going to experience (Willis, Ward, & Levenson, 2014).
The rehabilitation approaches for occasional offenders can be, intensive community supervision which entail probation and parole. We also have treatment and in prison rehabilitation programs. Occasional offenders normally engage in crime because circumstances around them push them to. The activities they are involved in only occur because of their routine daily lives for example shop lifting.
Under the intensive community supervision we have probation and parole. Probation is releasing an offender from detention and putting him or her under a strict supervision and the offender is required to exhibit good behavior (Kaeble,Maruschak, & Bonczar,2015). The process is usually ordered by the court. The criminal must prove that he or she is not a threat to the society so that the court finds a reason of not keeping him or her behind bars. The court allows the criminal to live freely but he or she is required or abide by certain rules or conditions as stipulated in the order. In some occasions, the probationers are required to show proof to the court that they have compiled to the terms and conditions of the courts. Failure to comply with the conditions may lead to revocation of the probation and issuing of a jail sentence. Parole on the side is the release of a prisoner temporarily or permanently before completion of a sentence on the promise of good behavior (Kaeble,Maruschak, & Bonczar,2015). These methods are effective as they involve monitoring the criminals and they have to remain at their best character as misbehaving can get them behind bars.
There is also the treatment program which can work effectively for the occasional offenders. Some criminal activities are as a result of offender’s drug problems. Putting them in a rehab and helping them solve their drug issues controls the recidivism rate. The drug rehabilitation programs can be offered when they are serving their jail term. This will help them overcome the addiction problem and become better serving members of the society after serving their sentence. This program can also be offered when someone is in probation or parole.
Prison rehabilitation programs are important. These programs will be necessary for the prisoners to adjust to the outside conditions when they are released from prison. The programs will be necessary for them to acquire job skills, fight addiction and put them in a better position to compete with others.
